Al and I go way back to our Junior High School football days at Highlands. I was shocked when his wife Sandy e-mailed me that he had passed away. We were close friends on and off the field and I will always have great memories of him.

Just gob-smacked to hear about my best friend (going back to 3rd grade).  Al was 20 pounds lighter than when he was in high school and ran half-marathons.  Thought he would out live all of us.  When we got togther a couple of years ago, we were finishing sentences for each other just like 50 years ago.  Really going to miss him!!  Heart goes out to Sandy...

Mike and I were very sorry to hear of Allen's passing.  We always enjoyed seeing and greeting him as he

ran by our home each day in Windcrest.  We will miss him.  Mike and Marilyn Welch

Here is a response I sent [Oct. 12th] to Sandi's email announcement to John and I:

Dear Sandy...Thank you so much in letting us know of Al's passing.   There aren't many days of the week that pass when I don't think of y'all and the fun times we had in an evening out and then dessert at your kitchen table.

[[ I appreciated that Allen persuaded a couple of his reluctant mates to attend the HHS 50th Anniv. Reunion in 2014.  It was really good to see him and you and the other guys.  John and I grew to love you Thackers  over the subsequent years.]]

I know that you must be devastated with this sudden aloneness.  [I am hanging on to John as he has his ups and downs after his Nov. 2016 stroke -- not a 'mild' one].

I remember that you two have the kids. They'll be a great comfort to you...

Perhaps, also, the HHS Class of '64 will have an 'In Memory" notice?  Al was well known and liked by many of his classmates.  [ Today, I'm glad to see this 'in Memory' has been posted.]

All our Sympathy in Your Time of Grief...LoveAlways, Cristin (Wells) and John Hines.

PS -- Sandi~~My mind went cold when I read your email notice to us.  I want to reach through cyberspace to you now and hold your hands and give you a warm hug of comfort.  Please feel it.  We're so sad for you ...and the kids.   [ If Mr. Thacker is still with you, I pray that he will also be comforted. ]....Our love and prayers--Cristin/John.

PSPS ...info for Al's classmates> Wife, Sandi, emailed this:   "In May he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of gastric cancer, no treatments worked for him."
