We called him at school "Sherrill Poland." I don't know why he used his middle name, but I liked it and considered it unique, as he himself was. A bit mysterious, too, because one never heard him speak -- very much, very often, or very loud. A quiet young man. I've often wondered what became of him. He had an ethnic look to him. I thought maybe he was of Polish extraction. But that was silly...just because his name was Poland. Maybe Armenian...? Now I see that he's gone. I was surprised, just as when I see others on the 'departed' list whom I knew and spent so many days being with...all those years...all those years ago.
I hope you had a good life, Sherrill, and I'm sure that there is family and friends who miss you very much.
