I graudated from nursing school in 1967 and went to work at Baptist Hospital on a Med-Surg ward. My ex-husband (Buddy Smith) moved to California for a few months then he was sent to Viet Nam and I returned to SA. Carrie was born in 1970 and Kristy in 1974. I began working in oncology in 1976. I administered chemotherapy in a private practice setting for 13 years. I was instrumental in establishing Guadalupe Valley Hospice during that time. I began working in research at CTRC in 1994 and have stayed in research since. I moved to UT in 1998 to work in research for myeloproliferative diseases (MDS and Myelofibrosis). I organized a city-wide Candel-light Vigil as part of the national March on Cancer in 1998. I served as president of the San Antonio Clinical Trials Task Force for many years where I organized several city-wide symposiums to educate about clinical trials. I have authored a book chapter in a Manual for Clinical Trials Nursing which has been one of my career highlights. I married Richard in 1995 and became part of a large and wonderful new family. Our 13 grandkids keep us busy! Currently, I am still employed by UT and working at CTRC on breast and colorectal cancer clinical trials. Richard has been my greatest fan and technical supporter for so many of my endeavors and tolerates my long hours. Thank you honey!
